How to Start Prioritizing Yourself
Dec 08, 2024Prioritizing yourself isn’t selfish—it is essential for your health.
Just as any athlete knows the importance of rest, setting time aside for yourself is how your mind and body recover, process, and grow. This is the space where your brain untangles thoughts, processes emotions, and allows creativity to flourish. It is when you come up with new ideas, and let the extra go. It’s when your body heals and your energy cup refills.
When you’re healthy—mentally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically—you gain the capacity to give back to your loved ones, your work, and your community without resentment or exhaustion. In fact, when you are living in a state of balance and wellness, you'll find that giving back comes naturally and feels effortless. In that state of balance heavier feelings like bitterness, anger and overwhelm fade; and connections become deeper and more fulfilling. Kindness becomes easy. However, the demands of life can easily overwhelm you if you neglect to manage your time, energy, and well-being.
Taking time for yourself isn’t selfish—it’s essential. It’s how you prevent burnout, stimulate your mind and rediscover your passions. It is how you maintain your emotional, spiritual and mental health. When you prioritize yourself, you become a stronger, more resilient, more present version of who you are meant to be.
If you’ve ever struggled to quiet a racing mind or release built-up tension, remember this: prioritizing stillness and self-care is not indulgent—it’s necessary! It helps your mind recenter, your body relax, and your peace return. By strengthening your relationship with yourself, you build the foundation for thriving relationships with the people and pursuits you value most.
True wellness is the integration of mind, body, and spirit. While many focus on one or two of these areas, genuine harmony—and the joy and peace that come with it—emerges when you nurture all three.
Remember, your GLOW comes from within you, and it starts with you taking the intentional and nurturing time to pause.
How to Start Prioritizing Yourself
You must start first by saying yes, (not maybe, sometimes or "when I have time"). The objective is MAKING the time. It doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Think about it like "buying yourself energy to mange the things in your life." Start by saying yes in small ways to the right things.
- Be aware of your motivators, habits and distractions. Pause to reflect so that you can follow the learning curve. Be honest with what you see. Every day is a new one and one where you can start again.
- Schedule "Me Time": Block out time in your calendar just for you. Non-negotiable. Treat it like any other important appointment and stick to it. You are important too! (without you, none of the stuff you're concerning yourself with will be done).
- Set Boundaries: Learn to say no to things that drain your energy or don’t align with your priorities.
- Incorporate Daily Rituals: The goal is space in your day for you. Prayer or meditation is time well spent. Letting your mind focus on deep breathing or even 5 minutes will settle your nervous system. Take a short walk with a smile on your face. Go screenless and read before bed, even 10 min will nourish your spirit. Find small ways to care for yourself every day.
- Seek Support: Self-help is a journey, and you don’t have to go it alone. Be aware of your needs when you're choosing your support network to be sure they are the "right" support for you at this time. Whether through books, courses, or communities like Finding GLOW, seek out resources that align with your values, inspire and guide you on your path to healthy well living.
- Seek a lifestyle abundant with GLOW. Embrace the perfectly imperfect human-ness of your daily existence. You come with brilliances and you'll make mistakes. You're filled with talents and gifts (some you aren't even aware of) and sometimes you can be stinky. GLOW means that you embrace Grace. You can laugh at yourself in your wins and misfortunes. You are more than these things. Love yourself and love others, it's the highest and most effective tool you'll ever have. Commit to Observation to see it all in truth. And here's your daily reminder that you are Whole. Be authentic self. No one will do it for you. The rest will take care of itself and you'll find what you need in the right time. Have a little faith. You have what it takes.
